Computing

Computing

At Woodthorpe, we aim to provide children with a high-quality computing education, which equips them to become digitally literate (able to use and develop their ideas through the use of technology). Technology is essential to our lives: we firmly believe that children must be taught the fundamental skills, knowledge and understanding relating to computing if they are to succeed in the future workplace as active participants in a digital world – a key skill for life.

Naturally, our ambitious computing curriculum challenges our children, prompts their curiosity and extends understanding around the coding and algorithms that ultimately underpin technology. Children learn through exploring and investigating the internet, whilst simultaneously gaining a secure understanding around how they can use it positively, safely and respectfully. It is through computing that children at Woodthorpe are inspired to explore technology, which in turn allows our children to thrive in today’s ever-progressing technical world.

Our computing curriculum is based on the published scheme, Kapow. As a result, we cover the three core areas from the National Curriculum (digital literacy, information technology and computer science) through five main strands: computing systems and networks; programming; creating media; data handling and online safety. These are revisited year on year, where pupils progressively build upon their skills and knowledge. We frequently revisit online safety through themed days, assemblies and celebrations such as, ‘Safer Internet Day’.

Through the use of Kapow, children will learn how computers and computer systems work; they will design and build programs, develop their ideas using technology and create a range of content. After the implementation of the high quality computing curriculum, children will be digitally literate. They will be equipped, not only with the skills and knowledge to use technology effectively and for their own benefit, but more importantly- safely.

We strive to enhance our computing curriculum, wherever possible, and achieve this in a number of ways. By working closely with our local University, we offer a variety of different workshops each year that have been based around topics such as robotics and augmented reality. We also strive to welcome in visitors and experts in the field to enhance learning too: including Bletchley Park employees, individuals working in STEM and coding experts.
