Welcome to Woodthorpe!

Our school is a happy, exciting and caring community where each child is nurtured and encouraged to grow and thrive.

Together with our Ducklings nursery provision, we welcome children right from the age of 3 through to Year 6 when children leave us to move up to secondary school. To find out more about how your child could benefit from our incredible environment, please drop us a line to arrange a visit – we’d love to show you around!

Welcome to our amazing school!

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Woodthorpe Primary School where we are proud of all of our children and their achievements.

We are aiming to create a truly outstanding school and so have the highest expectations of ourselves. We challenge ourselves to be the best that we can possibly be while still having fun and a smile on our face.

We believe that by creating learning opportunities that are fun, having people around who care and having the right level of challenge – our children will have a successful time at school.

You will get a feel of our school from this website but please feel free to get in touch with us directly if you would like to know more about what we offer.

Love, support and empathy

World Book Day 2023 gave us the perfect opportunity to demonstrate respect. We celebrated the book The Girl Who Planted Trees by Caryl Hart by creating beautiful leaves for our school Kindness Tree. We are proud to see these on the Kindness Tree and the leaves are a stunning reminder of the trees each class planted at school this term.

This term we have also been lucky to welcome WWII veteran, Ken Cooke (Cookie) who came in to school to speak to the children about D-Day and The Blitz. Cookie taught us a lot about respect.

Our pupils are challenged appropriately to ensure that they reach their best possible level in all areas.

Our children embrace every challenge

We want our children to succeed both during their time at Woodthorpe and after they leave us. Through our ethos and curriculum we embrace challenge, ensuring our pupils are challenged appropriately.

In March 2023, Owl Class recently had the most incredible trip to York St John University. They started their visit with a tour of the University to learn a more about what life is like as a student and then headed to the art and drama studios where they performed their own Greek play. They loved taking part in the project – it was magical!

We show pupils how to present themselves in a appropriate way with good manners and determination.

A supportive and nurturing environment

Every day at Woodthorpe we try to give our children skills for life. This half-term, we are particularly proud of our Year 6 children who have been incredibly focused over the last few months, sharpening their SPAG knowledge, consolidating their comprehension and mastering their mathematics in the lead up to SATs 2023.

The children have demonstrated the most wonderful levels of dedication and resilience, approaching each test with a sense of calm, in a collected manner and with a quiet confidence. We have been so proud of their learning journey and know that each and every member of Year 6 has done their best.

To equip our children for their future endeavours we encourage healthy mindsets and active bodies.

Inquisitive appetites and positive mindsets

This term some of our Year 5 and 6 children embarked on a three-day residential to Peat Rigg. Whilst there, they took on some epic challenges: river walking, orienteering, archery and caving (to name a few)! Each and every child achieved many goals and showed some outstanding teamwork and perseverance along the way.
